education for reconciliation

In the spirit of reconciliation, we respectfully acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Indigenous peoples, who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. Turtle Island, as it's known to many Indigenous communities, holds deep significance and history. We honour their connection to this land, their cultures, their stories and their resilience. Together we commit to learning more about their traditions and histories, and to building relationships based on understanding and respect.

about the project

The Impact Society is currently developing a new program called Education for Reconciliation. The primary focus of the Education for Reconciliation program is to build a grade 11 social studies curriculum that provides students with an honest account of the history and legacy of the colonization of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The program will utilize Indigenous ways of knowing, being, connecting and doing, to create an engaging curriculum that not only values an Indigenous worldview, but challenges students to develop critical thinking skills that will contribute to a more equitable and inclusive present and future for all Canadians.

Education for Reconciliation is being co-created with a Circle of Advisors; a group of Indigenous individuals who provide leadership, guidance and feedback to ensure that the program accurately reflects the voices, perspectives and knowledge of Indigenous people across Alberta.

  1. Foster student understanding of how diverse Indigenous cultures and traditions are deeply interconnected within their historical context.

  2. Illuminate the lasting impact of colonization affecting Indigenous People of Canada.

  3. Cultivate critical thinking skills conducive to truth and reconciliation efforts.

  4. Engage students in experiential learning grounded in Indigenous worldviews.

  5. Contribute to reconciliation efforts by addressing two of the 94 Calls to Action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
